Climate and clothing
The climate in New Orleans in August is considered
subtropical as the metropolitan area is virtually surrounded
by water. Lake Pontchartrain, some 610 square miles in area,
borders the city on the north and is connected to the Gulf of
Mexico through Lake Borgne on the east. In other directions
there are bayous, lakes and marshy delta land. The proximity
of the Gulf of Mexico also has a great influence on the climate.
Elevations in the city vary from a few feet below to a few feet
above mean sea level. A massive levee system surrounding the
city and along the Mississippi River offers protection against
flooding from the river and tidal surges. The surrounding water
modifies the temperature extremes and almost daily sporadic
afternoon thunderstorms keep the temperature from rising much
above 90 degrees F (32 degrees C), but temperatures can reach
95 degrees F (35 degrees C) or higher, while 102 degrees F (38.5
degrees C) has been the warmest. Relative humidity ranges from
66-92%. The Sheraton Hotel conference facilities and rooms are
air conditioned and can be quite cool. A sweater or other appropriate
clothing may be desirable. Other than the banquet, all functions
will be casual attire.
Electrical supply
110-115 V 60 Hz.
Language
English is the official language of the conference.
